Moving Checklist

WITH YOUR MOVER

  •  Confirm the date of your move
  •  Finalize arrangements with your moving company. Confirm arrival times and make sure your movers have directions to your new address.

 STORAGE

  •  Book extra storage space if required and make sure your move-in date is confirmed.

PREPARING YOUR HOUSEHOLD GOODS

  •  Start getting rid of possessions you no longer need. Decide which items can be taken to a thrift or missions store, or offered to your friends or church.
  •  Start packing non-essential items such as books and non-seasonal clothes into boxes.
  •  If you need new furniture or carpets – order them now and arrange delivery for when you move in.
  •  High Value items should be personally transferred if possible: such as fine jewelry, small heir looms, hand guns ect; Plan how you will pack and relocate them.

LEAVING YOUR HOME

  •  If you’re renting, notify your landlord of your moving date
  •  Notify the appropriate utility companies of your move date.
  •  Turn in any keys to your land lord and get signed documentation you are free and clear
  •  collect any refunds on rent or fees

NEW HOME

  •  Arrange a time to collect the keys for your new home from the Real estate agent.
  •  Notify the appropriate utility companies of your move in date.
  •  Do a final walk through before your mover’s start moving items into the home to note any damage you may have missed previously, or areas of challenge for putting furniture in.

CHILDREN & PETS

  •  If you have children or pets, arrange for someone to look after them during the move.
  •  If your Children are school age be sure all of the documentation is en route to make a smooth transfer to the new school (ask for copies of records if possible to have on hand) and keep their school supplies separate from all of the other household goods for easy access
  •  Notify your veterinarian of your move and seek a new veterinarian at your new location.

HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

  •  Let your doctor, dentist and optician know if you’re moving out of the area.
  •  Ask for transfer release of information to give to your new doctor/dentist/optician.
  •  Cancel any upcoming appts that will not be kept due to the move and re-schedule with your new provider (Most offices charge fees for missed appts)

INSURANCE

  •  Check your home insurance – make sure you have coverage from the day you move in to your new home.
  •  Make sure your Auto Insurance provider is aware of your relocation. It could mean lower rates.
  •  Life Insurance companies will also need to have your new address.

FINANCIAL TRANSITIONS

  •  Notify the bank of any changes to direct debits and standing orders.
  •  Investment accounts ect., will also need your new address

US POSTAL SERVICE

  •  Visit the post office and arrange for your mail to be forwarded.

SUBSCRIPTIONS & CLUBS

  •  Make a list of everyone who should know about the move. Send out change of address cards including newspapers.
